Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)
In a world where flat abs and extremely toned tummies are the norm, getting a picture perfect stomach is a big deal for a lot of people. Since no one seems to have enough time for strenuous crunches and time-consuming diets, most people opt to undergo tummy tuck surgery instead.
There’s no need to feel alone in this journey – contrary to popular belief, majority of people actually choose to enhance the appearance of their stomachs surgically, instead of naturally. After all, tummy tuck surgery (abdominoplasty) can achieve natural-looking results as well.
Here in Manila, most people would go to our resident expert, Dr. Karlo Capellan, to have their excess fat removed and their abdominal muscles tightened. Be one of the wise – book your initial consultation with him today.
What can abdominoplasty help you with?
Since abdominoplasty is concerned with enhancing the appearance of your stomach, here are some reasons why people choose to undergo it:
• Excess abdominal skin that sags
• Excess abdominal fatty tissue that causes a protruding stomach
• Excess loose skin brought about by weak abdominal muscles (due to pregnancy or extreme weight loss)
It would be preferable if the female candidates planned their abdominoplasty when they’ve already decided to stop having children. Also, it would be best if the tummy tuck surgery candidates of both sexes were to avoid extreme weight gain or extreme weight loss.
How does tummy tuck surgery work?
We all have different stomachs; therefore, we all have different preferences when it comes to undergoing the surgery. Normally, abdominoplasty is performed on an outpatient basis with the help of a general or regional anesthesia (as preferred). It takes around 2-4 hours. Here’s how it’s usually performed:
• A horizontal incision above the pubic hairline will be made.
• From here, repairing of weak abdominal muscles and removal of excess tissue, fat and skin will be made.
• Depending on your amount of loose skin, a second incision around the navel can also be produced to remove excess upper abdominal skin.
• To complete the surgery, closing of the incisions through sutures will be done.
How do you recover from tummy tuck surgery?
Moderate to severe pain accompanied by swelling and bruising (and temporary numbness, occasionally) around the area may last for 2-3 weeks. You can manage this pain, though, since Dr. Capellan will prescribe oral medications to you, as needed.
You may also be advised to wear an abdominal binder to support the growth and recovery of your abdominal area.
Give your body the rest it deserves and refrain from exhaustive activities such as bending, lifting and straining. Light exercise such as short walks can be done for the promotion of blood circulation.
You can resume normal activity (including your exercises) within 4-6 weeks after the surgery.
What are the risks associated with tummy tuck surgery?
Achieving a beautiful and natural-looking tummy is not without risks. For the interest of full disclosure, here are some complications you can consider:
• bleeding
• infection,
• reactions to the anesthesia, accumulation of fluid (seroma),
• poor wound healing, and;
• changes in skin sensation.
Should you require a comprehensive explanation of these, Dr. Capellan will gladly accommodate you during your initial surgical consultation with him.

What can liposuction help you with?
When diets, exercises and extreme fat removal techniques don’t work for you, this is when liposuction comes in the picture. To give you an idea, body parts such as the following are common locations for liposuction:
• abdomen,
• back and buttocks,
• thighs,
• knees,
• calves,
• upper arms,
• face, and;
• even the neck.
Liposuction candidates are not far from their ideal weight – they just need a little “push” to achieve their target weight and body. Generally, the success of the surgery is dependent on the status of your skin: the more elastic your skin is, the higher the potential of liposuction surgery to succeed is.
How is liposuction usually done?
Because it is an outpatient medical procedure, liposuction takes only several hours, depending on the area concerned, and is performed under general anesthesia. In a step-by-step procedure:
• Several small incisions in the concerned area will be made.
• Through these incisions, a thin, hollow tube called a cannula, will be moved back and forth to facilitate the breaking down of fat layers.
• After fat is broken down, they are then suctioned from your body through a vacuum device connected to the cannula.
Depending on the patient, a tumescent liposuction technique can also be used. Here, fat cells are infused with a saline solution that solidifies the fat so it is easier to remove. (This technique can also facilitate the reduction of bruising and swelling while you’re recovering after the surgery.)
To help determine the technique most suited to your personal situation, it is recommended that you book an initial consultation with Dr. Capellan at your earliest convenience.
How do you recover after undergoing the liposuction procedure?
The recovery process is different from every patient because it is dependent on the size of the concerned area and on the technique that was performed.
Naturally, expect feelings of swelling and bruising as normal – they will go away within 2-3 weeks after the surgery. To help with the recovery process and adjustment to the new (and enhanced) body shape, you may also be advised to wear a compression garment over the treated. You can return to working 3-7 days after the surgery. Remember, stay away from highly exhaustive activities first! As for your normal exercise routines, it is best that you wait 2-4 weeks before resuming them. No need to worry about the specifics – you and Dr. Capellan will definitely discuss about the recovery process in a more comprehensive explanation, once you mutually determine that you are ready to undergo the surgery.
What are the risks that are to be expected after liposuction surgery?
Since liposuction is an invasive surgery, certain complications such as the following need to be disclosed properly:
• seroma (fluid accumulation),
• infection,
• bleeding,
• reactions to the anesthesia, and;
• irregular body contours.
Of course, for you to decrease your risk towards these complications, it’s highly encouraged that you stop smoking, stop taking aspirin and stop taking other anti-inflammatory medications before the surgery. Keep in mind that complications associated with liposuction are extremely rare, especially in physically and mentally well patients. Simply follow the instructions before, during and after the surgery and you’re good to go.

• You have cellulite all over your body, most particularly in your lower areas
How is buttock lift surgery usually done?
Butt lift is an outpatient procedure done under general anesthesia. The length of the surgery depends on the technique that will be used.
Dr. Capellan can actually enhance the appearance of your backside with three techniques, depending on your preference:
• Buttock Lift (Gluteoplasty) – removes excess skin and fatty tissue around your buttocks to produce a firm texture and a pleasing shape. This can also improve cellulite appearance and give the illusion of a younger-looking body.
• “Brazilian Butt Lift” – injects your excess fatty tissue into the buttocks area to add shape that is dimensionally attractive and to create an illusion of lifting. As a result, young-looking and firmer buttocks are created.
• Buttock Lift with Silicone Implant – a butt silicone implant will be positioned intra-muscularly. The muscle of target will be within the gluteal muscle. In the end, a shape that is dimensionally attractive will be provided so there will be additional buttock volume.
How do you recover after undergoing the buttock lift procedure? Expect feelings of swelling and bruising to subside within the first 2 to 3 weeks. Since the area of operation is mostly in the buttock and lower areas, it’s highly advised that you refrain from sitting for a week after the surgery. Highly strenuous activities should not be performed as well. As for resuming work and normal activity, most patients do this within 8-10 days after the surgery.

For clients who have little excess skin, a minimal incision is produced in the armpit. From here, a small amount of skin is removed. For clients who have a lot of excess skin, a minimal incision is produced from the elbow to the arm pit area. From here, a lot of excess skin is removed. To produce natural-looking results, the incision scars will be hidden from view. Even so, proper scar maintenance with the use of silicone cream may still be necessary to enhance its appearance.

Thigh lift surgery, or thighplasty, is the perfect solution for all your fat-busting and thigh-thinning needs! Most clients undergo thigh lift surgery to decrease the sagginess of their thighs and to experience having fit and toned thighs that do wonders for their self-esteem.
How is thigh lift surgery usually performed?
As a two-hour surgery done on an out-patient basis, thigh lift surgery is done under general anesthesia. Since different patients require different preferences, different techniques to perform this procedure also need to be taken into consideration:
1. A medial thigh lift – incision is placed along the groin crease to the buttock crease.
Here, Dr. Capellan will lift the skin and remove the excess fatty tissue, as needed.
2. A circumferential upper thigh lift – incision is placed at the top of the leg, around where the lower edge of the underwear should be.
Here, Dr. Capellan will remove a small amount of skin and pull up the remaining skin so that both sides of the leg will be tightened.
3. An inner thigh lift – incision is placed from the groin to the inner knee.
Here, Dr. Capellan will improve the appearance and sculpt the shape of the whole upper leg by removing loose skin and tightening saggy areas.
To complete the surgery, incisions will be closed by deep sutures to prevent the appearance of skin sagging.
How do you recover after undergoing thigh lift surgery?
Different patients have different recovery periods, but it’s safe to assume a recovery period range of 8 to 10 days, so be sure to inform your place of employment so that you can have a restful and speedy recovery.
